Attributes: S.P.E.C.I.A.L. and Builds

This article will tell you everything about Attributes in Fallout 4. You will understand what for they are requited and how to distribute them.

When you start the game you need to create character. Character creation process is easy and rather interesting. We have dedicated article about this. One of the steps during character creation is distributing Attribute points. This step begins after you open the door and see Vault Tech agent. The agent asks you to tell more information about you. You will see special screen where you can tweak characteristics of your character.

There are 7 core attributes: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck form the acronym S.P.E.C.I.A.L. They determine basic power and possibilities of your hero.

  • Strength – is a measure of your physical power. It affects how much you can carry and your damage in melee combat.
  • Perception – is your environmental awareness and “sixth sense” and affects weapon accuracy in V.A.T.S.
  • Endurance – measure of your overall physical fitness. It affects your total health and the Action Point drain from sprinting.
  • Charisma – is the ability to charm and convince others. It affects the prices of barter deals and your ability to persuade people in dialogues.
  • Intelligence – determines overall acuity and affects the number of Experience Points earned.
  • Agility - is a measure of your overall finesse and reflexes. It affects your ability to sneak and number of Action Points in V.A.T.S.
  • Luck - measure of your general good fortune. Affects Critical Hits and chances of finding better items.
Each characteristic can be leveled up to the 10th rank. Simple calculation shows that you need 70 points in order to max all the characteristics :) But unfortunately you have only 21 attribute points in total. You can have access to only 1/3 of powers. That’s why creation process is very important. You can’t be master in all areas and you have to select.

Perks

The way you distribute your Attribute points affects Perks you are able to access. Each attribute has 10 perks connected with it. The more points you invest in definite attribute the deeper perks you can reach. For example 3 points in Agility give you access to Sneak perk, 4 points to Mister Sandman perk, 5 points to Action Boy and so on.

You need to spend 10 points in order to reach deepest perks. But only 21 points are available. As you see you can’t reach all the perks in Fallout 4 because the number of points you have for your attributes is limited.

Character Build

The way you distribute your Attribute points is your character build. Some players may decide to maximize only 2 characteristics reaching the deepest perks while other may decide to create an average character with wide range of skills. What is better: to focus on one or two characteristics or to distribute points between all avaliable attributes? We don't know. You are free to create your own hero. All builds have their advantages and disadvantages but don’t forget that you can’t be a master in all areas simultaneously.

Here is a build from official Game Trailer made by Bethesda. Please note: this build is not for “Copy - Pasting”! You don’t have to use this build. We recommend you to get familiar with all the perks before you start playing and make you own build depending on your focus in the game.

  • Strength: 2
  • Perception: 3
  • Endurance: 2
  • Charisma: 7
  • Intelligence: 3
  • Agility: 1
  • Luck: 10

From the video about perks u can find that it is possible to buy stat points for perk point, so if you want u can even max all your stats, but if the level cap is 50 then u will have almost no perks, so u can get most «delicious» perks even if u haven't got stat's for it by now — just improve the needed stat.

Theres no lvl cap in FO 4 my fellow wastland wanderer which leads me to believe that they wont allow u to add points to attributes when lvln up.

There is no level cap, but getting everything maxed would take FOREVER. You need 239 levels for every perk rank and max attributes.

This build works good for Settlement building and upgrades as well as for weapons, armor and even Melee upgrades.

Gives you everything you need from level 1. This build gives you access to all the skills you will ever need to be a walking gatling gun, but also gives you lock picking, hacking and access to armor/weapons/science to fully upgrade any armor and/or weapons in the game. Easily modifiable to an assault rifle style of build as well with greater accuracy.
